The Oregon State Senate confirmed Clatsop County District Attorney Josh Marquis' appointment to the Oregon Criminal Justice Commission Tuesday.
Gov. Ted Kulongoski nominated Marquis to be one of seven members of the commission, which helps plan criminal justice policy for the state of Oregon. Nominations to the commission require Senate confirmation.
Marquis thanked state Sen. Betsy Johnson and Sen. Kate Brown of Portland for their assistance in getting his confirmation.
Marquis said that he considered it a great honor to be on the statewide justice planning board and that as the only District Attorney on the Commission he hoped to bring his range of experience of more than 25 years in Oregon law enforcement.
He has been outspoken in his support for tougher legislation on drunk driving, the need for continued accountability for serious and violent offenders, and for victims rights.
He has served as Clatsop County's chief prosecutor since March 1994 when he was appointed to the job by then-Gov. Barbara Roberts. He ran for office two months later and has been twice re-elected to the post. He also serves as Oregon's director on the National District Attorneys Association board of directors, where he has just been named a member of that group's Executive Committee for the 2005-06 term.
